- Couplet
- (Dm) iv-VII-v-i-iv-VII-i
- Refrain:
The piece is in Dm for the verse, but modulates to Am at the chorus — the V degree of the dominant.
- Verse
- (Dm) VI/III↗iv↗v-i-iv-VII-i: The first chord is interesting; I find it hard to tell whether we are on a Bb/F or a Dm/F. Either way, the F in the bass allows for a diatonic ascending bass line.
- (Dm) iv-VII-v-i-iv-VII-i
- (Dm) iv-VII-v-III: I really like this deceptive cadence v-III, which I think is characteristic of this piece.
- (Dm) VI-VII-v-i: The “royal road progression” in a minor key, common in Japanese pop music.
- Chorus:
- (Am) i-VII-VI-ii/III-V/III-III: Descent Am-G-F, leading into a ii-V-I on the relative C major.
- (Am) i-VII-VI-ii/III-V/III-i: almost the same, but resolving directly to Am instead of C.
Worth noting is the use of diminished chords at a few instrumental moments, allowing for interesting transitions.
Also notable is the use of a dominant seventh chord over a fifth bass note (A7/E), giving a particular color to the progression.
